We are obsessed with this vintage curl look created by the beauty influencer Jade Kendle-Godbolt. Jade uses rollers, which is a safe and gentle hair styling technique that is suitable for naturally curly hair, as well as texturized hair and perm.
If you want to learn how to roller set like a pro, here we have a few tips for you.
First, always do a roller set on wet hair: make sure you evenly spray each section with water. Start curling from the back of your head and apply styling foam or a setting lotion to every strand as you go. Use smaller size rollers at the bottom and upgrade to the larger ones as you move up the top. Use pins to secure them in place.
In one of her posts Jade shares, that she uses rollers that have little ridges/teeth that help grip and create tension on her hair. She suggests that alternatively, you can use magnetic rollers too.
Make sure hair is tightly wrapped around each roller. Directing hair away from your face will give you the best results.
Now, once all the rollers are in, let your hair dry. If you have a hooded dryer, it should take you about 30-45 minutes, depending on your hair length and density. Alternatively, you may want to let your hair air dry.
In this case, it can take a few hours. Those with thicker or longer manes will have to wait longer until all their curls are set into place. You might want to cover the rollers with a hair net, so that not a hair is out of place in the process of drying.
Finally, once your locks are dry, take the rollers out and brush your curls. Jade wraps her hair with a silk scarf for 10-30 min to give it a smoother look and lock in shine.
Also, covering your curls when you go to bed is a great way to preserve them for several days. You can use a turban or a satin scarf for this purpose.
Fast forward to the finishing touches, the roller set looks particularly flattering when it’s brushed to one side. You can backcomb the crown area for that extra lift. If your hair is a bit dry, a few drops of hair oil will make it softer and smoother. Finish the hairstyle with a flexible hold hairspray to keep the curls bouncy and movable.
Those who prefer finer curls might want to try flexi rods instead, and here’s a tutorial on how to use them. The technique would work best for those with medium to long hair length:
Don’t get disheartened if your roller set doesn’t come out perfect the first time you try it. Give it another go, and we promise it will get better with every attempt.
